Are you Compelling? Overcoming Self-Doubt in Your Messaging

I don't know about you, but often I find myself questioning whether or not I am truly connecting with my target audience. How effective is my message, and is it actually resonating with those I'm trying to reach? These doubts are common among women business owners. According to a  KPMG study approximately 75% of executive women experience imposter syndrome in their careers, leading to missed opportunities and underselling of achievements. While I was familiar with that phenomenon, I didn't realize this pervasive self-doubt leads to 42% of women turning down promotions, 60% underselling achievements. Take that in for a minute. Women are STILL missing out on money, and downplaying their intelligence.  Well, in my problem-solving-Olivia-Pope fashion, I decided to dive into some Her Corner resources to answer the "Compelling" question.

Discovering Your Compelling Story

Like many entrepreneurs, even after 20+ years in business, I realize that I too need to continuously work on my messaging to stay relevant and impactful.  I started  with our  framework titled "Are You Compelling". Through various exercises and reflections, I found that I do have something valuable to offer, but articulating that value proposition and maximizing my efforts could use some fine-tuning. Check it out here if you are so "compelled".

The Importance of Finding Your Voice

The next resource was our recent Executive Exchange Series: Speaking of Her with Madia Brown that explored the value in visibility and finding your voice.  It's crucial to understand that being compelling does not mean being perfect. Striving for perfection can hinder your ability to connect authentically with your audience. Instead, focus on the journey of finding your unique voice and telling your story in a way that resonates with others. There will be challenges and setbacks along the way, but with guidance and support, you can navigate through them and ultimately reach your goals. Trust yourself.

Tips for Crafting a Compelling Narrative

  • Less is More: Don't oversaturate your messaging. People will tune you out.

  • Understand your audience: Take the time to research and understand the needs and preferences of your target market.

  • Be authentic: Stay true to yourself and your values in all of your communications.

  • Focus on benefits: Highlight the benefits and value that your products or services offer to your customers.

  • Use storytelling: Engage your audience through compelling storytelling that evokes emotions and connections.

  • Seek feedback: Don't be afraid to ask for feedback from trusted sources to improve your messaging.

So, are you compelling? The answer lies in your ability to connect with others, tell your story effectively, and stay true to yourself in the process. . In the end, your authenticity and passion will shine through, making you truly compelling in the eyes of your audience.
